Functions of aquarium UV light sterilizer

Functions of aquarium UV light sterilizer

Ultraviolet rays are divided into UVA, UVB, UVC, and vacuum ultraviolet rays. The difference between them is that the wavelength is different. The sunlight from the sun itself contains the above four types of ultraviolet rays, but after passing through the earth's ozone layer and clouds, only UVA and UVB left. UVA and UVB have little ability to kill bacteria and kill algae.
It is UVC that really has a strong sterilization ability. The UVC wavelength is 280nm-200nm. The effective wavelength of the germicidal lamp for a fish tank is 253.7nm, which is the wavelength of UVC.

  1. Sterilization lamp has three functions, the smallest function is sterilization.
There are two types of bacteria in pet fish tanks: moving and non-moving. The non-moving bacteria are mainly nitrifying bacteria. They lie on the filter material all year round and live very well. The bacteria killed by the germicidal lamp are fungi that swim with the water. There are two types of bacteria in this part: beneficial bacteria and harmful bacteria. In the process of using a germicidal lamp to sterilize, in addition to killing harmful bacteria, you also killed a lot of beneficial bacteria, such as actinomycetes. Anyone with a little common sense knows that it is impossible to kill all harmful bacteria. As long as we maintain good water quality, even if there is a small number of harmful bacteria in the fish tank, it does not matter. The appropriate presence of harmful bacteria is still a good thing for the immune system of fish.

  1. The second function of UV light sterilizer is deodorization.
The odor in the pet fish aquarium comes from the hydrogen sulfide formed after the degradation of fish stool and food debris.
If the fish tank is not cleaned for a long time, the fish smell will be generated. At this time, the sterilization lamp should be turned on to kill the foreign bacteria with spoilage function, which prevents the generation of hydrogen sulfide and naturally no longer emit odor.
However, this is not a permanent cure, and it is the correct way to clean the filter cotton and filter chamber regularly.

  1. The biggest function of UV light sterilizer is to kill algae.
This is mainly about free algae in pet fish aquariums- the most common is chlorella. Chlorella is the main cause of green water in fish tanks. After the outbreak of chlorella in the fish tank, it actually did not cause any harm to the pet fish itself, but only affected the ornamental. If green algae break out in your fish tank, turn on the germicidal lamp for three consecutive days, then turn on 4 hours a day for the following week, and change it to two hours after one week. It is worth reminding that after a large number of chlorella deaths, a large amount of spoilage will appear in the aquarium. You need to clean the filter cotton immediately. It is best to add some Bacillus or denitrifying bacteria to your fish tank.
